5GREAT program!Apr 15, 2010
I have been looking for a long time for an affordable interactive star chart program, and this one certainly delivered. My first experience with star charting programs was with Software Bisque's The Sky: Student Edition, which I used for my first astronomy course in university, and as of late noticed it was highly inaccurate for time scales on newer computers, probably because of the system clocking on a multicore CPU. I did a little research, and read great reviews about Starry Night Pro, so I figured, why not try it out? Once I received the package (which was VERY well packed, thanks J & R!) I installed the program with no problems and was viewing the night sky in less than an hour. My first impression was WOW. I wasn't expecting the high-quality display of so many stars at the simulated naked eye view. I was also thoroughly impressed by the OpenGL rendering of most of the planets of our solar system, though some of them (Venus in particular) could use some high-res updates. I do have one gripe about the image quality of this program, and that is about the resolution of nebulae when zooming in: they do not sharpen beyond a certain point when magnifying. I wasn't really expecting a super-high resolution on the images of objects when I first installed the program, but after noticing how much you can zoom in on objects, it should stand to reason that the images of the celestial background should sharpen more than they do at increasing magnification. It's not enough to detract a star from the overall rating, given how many other options you have to play with. Among the features are the ability to center on and track any sky object in the index, which is updated fairly regularly and can be updated automatically with an internet connection, labeling for any object visible in your view, simulating the field-of-view of telescopes and binoculars (with support for different lens types), highlighting specific types of objects, showing the constellation outlines and their boundaries in the sky, and so much more. The real-time tracking feature is especially helpful for me because I like to see what is visible in my sky at any time. One really cool feature is the ability to "go to" any star in the sky, which places your camera view at the object in question. From that point, the universe looks entirely different from here on Earth, and it is really neat to see what the stars look like from other star systems. You can also experience "Spaceship mode" and fly wherever you feel like! All in all, it is a great program, and well worth the money for beginner and experienced astronomers alike.

1Starry Night ProJan 12, 2009
Since I received Starry Night Pro I have been trying to get help from the company(4 attempts)since I can not get it to load on my computer properly. If I do not hear from someone shortly I plan to return the purchase.

4Better than previous versionsJan 07, 2009
I was almost put off from purchasing Starry Night Pro 6 as some previous reviews said it was not compatible with Microsoft Vista. This version is, and it is much better, with more data, tours, images, etc. than older ones. It does take a while to get used to navigating it, but it is worth the effort. It comes with a useful operating manual.

5Making Me Star CrazyAug 09, 2008
My main interest is the Bible, but having noticed references to the heavenlies Job 38, Is 40:26, Ps 19:1, and so on and having a copy of Bullingers "Witness of the Stars" since 1979, I bought this. I didn't have problems loading it on any of my three computers, including my newest with Vista, (2 XP and 1 Vista) and having first followed their instructions and upgrading Quicktime player and downloading certain drivers from Microsoft it works great.
It is fairly easy to use as soon as you start it up, I still haven't read the books that cone with it, but I am having no problem tooling around the heavens and time.. It has inspired me to purchase an 8" Meade telescope, since I sit outside with my laptop and am able to identify what I am looking at. THIS PROGRAM IS GREAT. Several years back, I rented a 44' boat to tool around the Caribbean on my own, and lying on the top decks roof, I was awed and enveloped by the stars and what I now know was the Milky Way. It was great being away from light pollution, and of that whole trip my most memorable moment was that, being faced with the Lord's handiwork.

I would not hesitate to buy this program especially if you have read people having difficulties with Vista. Go to Starry Nights website (link below) and follow their instructions for hassle free enjoyment of this software. As soon as I ordered it from Amazon, I set my Vista laptop up following the directions and when it arrived, I had no problem at all, except the first couple of times I had to repeat the registration process, but finally it remembers me. :-> This review was for Starry Night Pro 6 that easily upgraded to 6.2, and I am running Vista Home Premium 32 bit.

God Bless and have fun.

1It SucksMar 04, 2008
i bought the "up-dated" version to run on vista, only to find out from tech support i would have to spend a day down loading 12 updates so the product would work. tech support said it was Microsoft's fault, but really it is the fault of the companies failure to spend the money to provide a version that would run on vista. if amazon would take it back i would return it, it's just junk!
